James Davies GearPods Frontier and Personalization

Well we picked the name GearPods Frontier for our new multi-kit system after a brief impromptu contest on FaceBook. In this last post about Frontier you'll find annotated photos of the system (full details are available here). We also wanted to talk about personalization.

It might seem like personalization and commercial survival kits in the same sentence is an oxymoron. How can you encourage persona

James Davies Extended Stay

Our new multi-kit system (MK-5, currently unnamed) due out later this week has a second theme: extended stay. We try to avoid putting numbers on our multi-kit systems, but if we did, GearPods Backcountry and GearPods Wilderness would probably fall into a 24-48 hour bracket. This new multi-kit system is more geared to 48-72 hours or even beyond. In our minds, this means adding a set of robust first-use tools (in particular for shelter construction and firewood gathering) and more consumables (sol… Continue

James Davies Tight or Relaxed Fit?

Next week we're introducing a new as-yet-unnamed multi-kit system (see us on FaceBook for a naming contest). Aside from being our most comprehensive kit to date, it has a few themes to it. It's shown here in olive drab and digital camo.

Mark Barner New Gearpods.

Just got in my new shelter pro kit and new components. I really like the new thread system. Got it out of the box, tightened the threads and put underwater in the bath tub for two minutes. Then took it outside into the pouring rain for fifteen minutes. No leaks! Threads seem to work a lot better also. Really liked the look of the new sleeves.

The shelter pro kit was really packed solid. Didn't get a chance to take it outside yet... yes it was pouring and it has a poncho, but th

James Davies New GearPods Connect Components

Now made in the USA, we've refreshed the GearPods Connect system components. There are two main changes. First we've introduced new colors for Terminators and Connectors. All new retail products will feature orange parts. The new colors are only available from GearPods direct for the time being. The new colors are more subdued - olive drab, coyote tan, and black. The second major change is the much-improved thread system. There is no chance of cross-threading these new units and the new Ter

James Davies New Sleeves

We're now shipping the new GearPods Sleeves (previously known as Tubes). Sleeves are still available in two sizes: 9.5" (GearPods Backcountry size) and 14.0" (GearPods Wilderness size). And two colors - we updated the woodland camo with ACU digital camo as the second color option (in addition to black).

James Davies New Survival Kits

Beginning next week, we're shipping the next version of our survival kit available as GearPods Survival and GearPods Survival Pro (was called Survival CS). We have made many changes and improvements to the survival kits based on customer feedback and the benefits of starting to scale production (allowing us to source better components). On our we… Continue

James Davies New Stove System

Our 2009 products included an emergency-use stove - the Hexagon Stove - that burns solid fuel tablets. We received a lot of feedback on the stove, mostly requests to make the stove more robust (for "first use" and not just "last-ditch" use) and more efficient. We went back to the drawing board (well, CAD software) and the result is the brand new 2010 GearPods Stove System (pictured below with the burner).

James Davies GearPods Backcountry Review (TripleBlaze, January 6 2010)

"The Backcountry GearPods kit is packed with enough survival gear to sustain any adventurer for days in the wild and features items in the following categories: first-aid, basic survival, and even cooking. We’ve seen plenty of compact and portable first-aid kits but the Backcountry takes things to an entirely different level .... Beyond being insanely useful, GearPods are simply beautiful. From the iconography to the tight and neat packaging you can see that a lot of thought went into creating e… Continue

James Davies Happy New Year!

Mark Barner Attaching GearPods to my Camelbak HAWG.

Mark Barner What I got! What next?

Well I got my order yesterday after the FedEx truck got stuck in a snow storm for two days. I purchased two "GearPods® Connect Starter Kit 3", one "GearPods® Stove" and one "GearPods® CookMug".Last night I spent several hours seeing what will fit in the various units. In the next week or two, I plan on testing the GearPods® kits out around my home before taking it out on a hike. Tonight I did some testing of the "GearPods® Connect Starter Kit 3”. I did two different water tests tonight, one in… Continue
