GearPods Frontier and Personalization

Well we picked the name GearPods Frontier for our new multi-kit system after a brief impromptu contest on FaceBook. In this last post about Frontier you'll find annotated photos of the system (full details are available here). We also wanted to talk about personalization.

It might seem like personalization and commercial survival kits in the same sentence is an oxymoron. How can you encourage personalization and at the same time market a pre-built kit? Well first of all we firmly believe in personalization as it leads to a much higher familiarity with the components of a kit. You don't want to be finding out how to use tools once you find yourself in a high-stress situation. Equally there is a certain economy to buying a baseline kit - one that you then configure yourself by adding and/or removing items. The question becomes which baseline kit best meets your needs.

At a higher level, there's configuration of a survival system comprised of multiple complementary kits. This is where we believe GearPods Connect excels, both in terms of encouraging a systematic/modular approach to survival gear as well as establishing a very configurable kit platform. Our multi-kits are as much blue-prints for build-your-own survival systems as they are products in their own right, with most of the components available individually for that reason.

Back to personalization and GearPods Frontier. We covered our bases with color choices. As we learn our market, we're understanding all the different reasons for customer color preferences. For the first time we also included a number of tools (over and above the medium- to light- use tools found in our standard kits). We selected several best-in-class tools from UST including the BlastMatch and the SaberCut saw. Moreover we noticed that when a customer selects UST, that brand preference spans other components like signal mirror and whistle.

For that reason GearPods Frontier has an additional option to make a set of substitutions to our standard Survival kit. Since Frontier includes UST's BlastMatch and WetFire Tinder, this option removes the SparkLite/TinderQuik combination from the kit, and substitutes the AMK Rescue Flash signal mirror and Fox40 Micro Safety emergency whistle for UST's StarFlash and JetScream respectively.
